Some Hoya are climbers, but not all. My Hoya serpens, linearis and curtisii (and a few more) have thin, weak stems that do not even attempt to climb anything. Here is my serpens:

Ritter described them in Kakteen in Südamerika, vol. 1 as 4 = golden yellow, 5 = orange red.

Sure, that is what I always do when I sow, and I have seen many pictures of such setups on this forum. Works well for small seedlings, older plants is a different story.

I grew cacti on an unglazed balcony for a few years, some (Echinocereus, Escobaria, Gymnocalycium etc.) protected from rain and snow by a sheet of plastic, some (Opuntia) unprotected. I brought the less hardy types inside on really cold nights, otherwise that setup worked well, mostly.

Judging from old photos of a plant I had I would say the stems were 3 to 5 cm in diameter.
