Re: Cactus world

The photo on the front cover had me stumped - all I could come up with was a hybrid Copiapoa Krainziana / Cinerea but the background coast didn't fit in. I didn't even consider Melocactus. For an amateur society, we're producing a very professional magazine.

Re: Aylostera albipilosa

Lovely plant, I think I'd call it Rebutia Muscula, I've not grown Albipilosa for a while but it usually has red flowers and much denser white spination. It shows that plants can come through a red spider attack with a bit of time and care.

Re: A little help/advice

John has been growing plants for even longer than I have and I'm always happy to hear his views. I had to explain to my 'voice activated label writer' why I was laughing at the screen reading about Acadama dust, or muesli as they call it down south. There used to be as natural progression through th...

Re: Pelargonium cotyledonis

DSCF7653.JPG Mine turned out to be a dead twig. It was the cultivar 'Ventnor' and came from ISI at The Huntington. It was supposed to have matt leaves rather than the normal form with shiny leaves. I don't think it had any leaves last year, I probably overwatered it when it was dormant and killed t...

Re: The latest of many recent poaching arrests in South Africa

Sadly, anything the BCSS does isn't going to have any effect on those countries that do nothing to discourage trade in habitat plants. I can't think of any way to stop this.

Re: Poaching......Conophytum burgeri

This reminds me of when Lau used to get his unfortunate boys to strip Mexican habitats. Locals stripping a habitat don't draw much attention as would a group of Chinese in hired vehicles, all that's needed is one visit to set the wheels in motion and one more visit to collect the plants and pay a sm...

Re: Pelargonium cotyledonis

Plus - it's on the Green List so you can go and see it in St.Helena and if you can get a direct flight back from their hardly-used new airport, there's no need to quarantine.
I keep looking at my plant and I think it's a dead twig.

Re: A Gasteria requires data explaining

I can't come up with any bright ideas on this one, it looks a bit like what might be expected if there was a cross between Liliputana and Verrucosa. I don't like nurseries using accession numbers, it gives a false sense of 'pedigree' about a plant. The newest main leaf on the right looks textured bu...

Re: Dudleya for debate- an exchange of views.

£6.50 was a bargain, there are bargains out there on ebay if you know what you're looking at. It's only a little more than the Californian wholesale price for a nursery-grown one about the same size. Personally, I've never asked for more than £2.50 ever on ebay, if it goes higher than that it's out ...
