It's tufts of wool and is quite natural. It's sometimes thought to be a cross with a true Othonna because Othonnas often have these wooly tufts whereas Crassothonnas generally don't.

Your plant is actually a form of Crassothonna capensis (or possibly a hybrid with something else) and what you're seeing is perfectly normal. When I first acquired this plant I thought they were mealies!

This is Senecio kleiniiformis. It used to be considered a true species but these days it's thought to be a hybrid - possibly more than one hybrid as it is quite variable. One parent is thought to be S. tropaeolifolius.

Senecio was a huge genus of 2,000 or so spp. but is gradually being split up. So eventually NO succulent spp. will remain in this genus since they're evolutionary far removed from Senecio vulgaris , the common groundsel, which is the type sp. of Senecio . My crested talinoides is similar. It produces a nice little cristate section but then throws out normal shoots at either end - and sometimes in the middle as well! I've never managed to keep it purely cristate. In my experience the cristate form of Senecio serpens (Curio repens) has similar tendenci...
