Re: Smaller agaves (and their hardiness)

Forget potatorum, it isn't UK hardy. How small is small? Top of my list would be A. polianthiflora, which is very small, also good and hardy - a precocious flowerer with interesting red flowers. Things like toumeyana, toumeyana bella, schottii, parviflora are similar but not quite as nice IMO. A. l...

Re: Pachycormus discolor - cuttings?

Hi Mike, I've not had any luck with these rooting. If you are going to trim wait until the stem is in fresh growth, I've had luck with bursera fagaroides rooting so its always worth trying. Good luck I've had the same experience with my attempts at rooting smaller cuttings of mine. After my failure...

Re: Identity required please

Although it's little more than a hunch, once a flower is formed, the first image may torn out to be an Aloe juvenna

Re: The first day of meteorological spring approaches

Aloes are on their second water. I did water Pterocactus araucanus today but it’s in a big clay pot and will dry out pretty quickly. Perhaps it will flower one day..... Same here. Once new growth appeared on Pterocactus tuberosus , and a few other Opuntiad s.. Echinocereus are also resuming growth,...

Re: Repotting at this time of year in the UK?

Is there a book that is accepted as a sort of bible amongst the Succulent community so i can learn? This book is a great source of information https://wiganlanebooks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/IMG_3482.jpg It's available here: https://bcss.org.uk/product/the-genus-echeveria-by-john-pilbeam/ T...

Re: Keeping my plants safe from the cats

For most of my plants, I grow them outdoors year round. So animals, such as birds can be a threat. I've found that an animal repellent spray works well. Since the wind can occasionally reach speeds of 50 mph, I use 2 methods for dealing with potted plants. For smaller plants, I pack them close toget...

Re: Gasteria pollination

As far as the answer to fertility, I don't know. As to the pollination, I often observe hummingbirds feeding on these upside down blooms. The result from this are numerous self sown seedlings near the plants involved. I would assume that the analogous birds, like Sunbirds, may have a similar appetit...

Re: My avonia quinaria won’t root and it’s been almost a year. Please send help

In the days before mass production of Mesembs,, a large percentage of these plants were field collected. A number of articles described the reluctance of these newly imported succulents to resume their typical growth period. From the findings discovered at that time, the nearly unanimous opinion was...

Re: Today at Wythenshawe

As some of you know, John Foley and I look after a large arid house collection at Wythenshawe Horticultural Centre , ( see thread On the Move ) Today John was busy showing John Henshaw of Croston Cacti around the greenhouses so it was up to Paul and I to finish moving the donated plants we got just...
