Two questions
1. Is Gasteria rawlinsonii self fertile
2. If it is how do I pollinate it.

Wow. How do you get them to keep all the lower leaves? Mine always lose them which results in a stick with a clump of leaves on top!

As far as I can see the days when folk wanted real habitat plants seems long gone in the UK.

Yes it was all like that. It said Maihueniopsis to me and I was sort of hoping it was one of the more uncommon Chilean ones but happy enough with it as another platyacantha.

It just needed the opposite of TLC
What a difference harsh growing conditions has made to this plant. I bought it because it looked odd and couldnt immediately decide what it was and have now grown it for three years in one of the unheated greenhouses at my allotment. Result is that the new growth is now typical and it reveals itself...

It gets worse…..I noticed today I have Primroses in flower.
Oddly this morning it was a couple of degrees above freezing when I got up at 6:30 but when I went into the garden at 9:30 there was a light frost and it was down to zero in both greenhouses. I have switched on the heating for tonight.

And about time too. We have Cameilas in flower, snowdrops almost out and Eucomis which haven’t finished dying down yet. If my mother was still alive she’d be saying ‘it all needs putting back in its place’.
