Re: Raising seeds in a propogator
How heated is the propagator? Very unlikely to be too warm. Most seeds and seedlings seem quite happy up to 30C and often warmer. There are possibly some that won't germinate that warm but I wouldn't swear to it. One issue can be that plants kept very warm can etiolate without sufficient light. Try ...

Re: Erecting a Greenhouse
Eden greenhouses are very nice if you don't want to go for one of the really expensive multi-thousand ones like Alton and Robinsons. Don't think I've ever seen a Sherbourne though, most of the range seems to have sliding doors :) Is the roof glass single sheet? It looks a lot longer than the typical...

Re: State of the Hobby ?
As with all great ideas, Maria, its been done! I've seen Manchester branch flyers in a couple of garden centres. My own branch discussed it at the last committee meeting. Apparently, a few years ago we went so far as to set up a manned post at a few garden centres. Some places see it as a way to gen...

Re: Erecting a Greenhouse
If a greenhouse has a long side and a short side, then the long side should be pointed in the direction of most sun, usually south. For square(-ish) greenhouses, you can quibble about whether to point the gable ends or the sloping roof towards the sun, but it doesn't make a massive difference. For m...

Re: my little "collection of lithops"
Is the L. gracilidelineata a double-header? Did it not flower this year? Look to the right, Julie, there's another baby lurking in the shadows :) The next one looks like L. hookeri too. And probably the one after that also. Then an interesting one. Some kind of L. karasmontana perhaps? And the last ...

Re: just joined
Maria, I just erected a greenhouse at the weekend. I was forced into it by the sudden arrival of a free greenhouse! Now I just need some glass ... I'm sure Hob can tell you more about building greenhouses, how many weeks did the foundation take? I just put down slabs, this will be a fairly temporary...

Re: Seedling - Plant Exchange - To revive or not
You can count me in with cactus babies, some at least will be fat enough by late spring. I also have some non-cacti that weren't taken on the MSG scheme last year.

Re: Pretty spines...and an easy quiz
This one disintegrated in spring 2006. It only fell a few feet onto a brick patio but I guess that was a few feet too many! A couple of the pups flowered in the autumn. The big one I gave away and is slowly dying
