I know this is not exactly on the scale of Tim from the Mojave but it is a step up from a window ledge and I'm pleased with it. I reckon with judicious use of shade netting and bubble wrap I should be able to use it all year round. I am only putting in plants which are frost hardy (supposed to be!?)...

I got all my first plants from Alan Phipps (number 2 on that list) not exactly a nursery but a garden with a few green houses and a lot of plants. Also all the time in the world to rummage, at your leisure, on your own. I was very pleased with what I got there. Need to call to make an appointment.

Wow, I'd get my whole house in that greenhouse! It will be interesting to hear your perspective on things, especially for a new boy like me. Welcome.

My conclusion is along the lines of DaveW, I think I'm going to go with a cold frame as my place is pretty exposed to the wind and only temporary so not worth to put up a greenhouse. Thanks for the feedback I'm glad I didn't go for the fold up greenhouse!

Standard cactus advice is don't water until the soil has dried out, but with gravel on top and different plants in different pots in different places, how do you know as a beginner? Do you use a moisture meter? I do have one which I had for something else a 'rapitest' that has a prod that you stick ...

I have recently acquired a small Oroya Peruviana(2inches tall).The only fairly consistent bit of information I can find about it in both my books and the internet is that it is difficult to grow, although one source did say it was easy!
