Re: NCSS archives?? seed sources

Hi Lindsey, The officials list that is published with the Journal each year contains names, addresses and telephone numbers for all branch secretaries, along with all main and ancillary national officers. Many of these people do not wish their full contact details to appear on a public-access websit...

Re: Limestone and Gypsum --- Good, Bad or Ugly?

WHOOOOSH !!!! That's the sound of this discussion flying right over my head!! I have to confess to having little or no knowledge or understanding of this topic. But I am interested to know the outcome of the discussion, since I was a little put out by the fact that Roy Mottram's review of the Arioca...

Re: Repotting challenge 2

Hi Colin, Since no-one else has bitten the bullet yet, I'll have first stab at the ID of the 4 cacti in your pic, Cleistocactus strausii is of course the white column at the back. The epiphyte on the left looks like Rhipsalis pilocarpa (still often see this labelled as Erythrorhipsalis) I'm kinda gu...

Re: Repotting challenge

Pressure, pressure pressure!! The plant middle back is hard to even guess with such an immature plant, but perhaps a species of Dracaena? Back right looks exactly like a very young Dracaena draco, but seedlings of some of the other members of the genus look more or less identical, so again its hard ...

Re: Repotting challenge

Deuterochnia is the name used for what we used to call Abromeitiella - those impressive mound-forming bromeliads (incidentally a guy at my local branch meetings used to call them 'BROMELOIDS', which always amused me). Interestingly, whenever I have had to NAS any bromeliads when judging succulent sh...

Re: HELP SPOTS

Hi Scousetigger, Don't despair too much about the orange spots on the two plants you supplied pix of. In fact Myrtillocactus geometrizans and Echinocactus grusonii are two of the best known culprits for developing these orange marks if they suffer too much cold. Unless the temperature dropped below ...

Re: Repotting challenge

Hi Colin, My comments were in jest, and I agree that many of the bromeliads are succulent and think that they would look perfectly at home on the showbench alongside all out other plants. The Shows Committee (on which I served for several years, before taking on the Journal) understandably steers cl...

Re: Repotting challenge

Hi Colin, What's an 'ae' or an 'ea' between friends? My fingers often work faster than my brain! Haha. I'm not so bothered about perhaps getting the bromeliad genus wrong,,,,, after all, they're not eligible for entry into BCSS shows as succulent plants, and are not included in the Handbook of Shows...

Re: The Cacti Quiz - Game On!!!!! THE WINNER Solved

Hi Ernie, [quote=Ernie]I am sat wondering if David Neville will have a go like Colin Walker did in the succulent quiz. It was good to see such an authority as Colin having a go and equally it would be good to see David, also an accepted authority, testing his knowledge in a bit of fun. Roy Mottram s...
