Re: Fine grit (1-2mm) for top dressing seeds - Sources
My fault Terry, I should have labelled both photos but forgot. Included the cuttings as I didn’t dare wield the metal tape near the seedlings. I only got the material recently, as labelled, from another collector, so don’t know it’s original source. The heads are very tiny but seem to be thriving so...

Jondo do a range of flint grits for chickens, I’ve found them very good. Smallest is chick grit, photographs attached, particle size looks 3mm maximum. Good prices for 25kg bags delivered.

Re: Back up heating
I'm thinking about a local or national power cut, not just a spare heater issue. Thanks anyway Peter. [/quote] My example would seem to rely on crossed fingers and prayer...... Funnily enough, in the 25 odd years I’ve been growing cacti and succulents second time around, I’ve never had a back up, no...

Re: Back up heating
Have to confess I haven’t got what you might call a formal back up to my electric heater. In the past in an emergency I’ve resurrected my old electric domestic convector heater which resides covered in dust in my shed. It kept the frost off ok until a new heater arrived.

Re: 2 plants that differ in more ways than one.
I’ve not had experience of raising Conophytum seed to maturity yet, is it possible just natural variation in plants from the same batch?
I know what you mean about breaking them up for cuttings, I always lose a few.

Yes Ralph! Now you mention it turgida rings a definite bell. Thanks.
Now you’ve got my brain cells active “pallida” also comes to mind. Is that also possible? Bear in mind I know absolutely nothing about Haworthia!

Re: 2 plants that differ in more ways than one.
The plant on the right looks as if it’s beginning to “stretch” with longer stems. Is it older than the other? Most Conophytum lose vigour as they get older and the stems lengthen. So could just need splitting up and starting new cuttings?
