Re: August 2011 Photo Competition - Back to Roots

A Thelocactus I obtained a year ago. Never realised the roots of a Thelocactus could be so tuberous.

Re: Seed pod question [plants names]

When I cross pollinated my G. andreae x G. saglione and G. andreae x G. baldianum I did so. On the seed packet where the seed was from G. Saglione I wrote G. saglione x andreae. So the mother plant first and then the father plant. :) Would that make much difference, which of the two is the carrier ...

Re: Does this look etiolated to you?

I have an Euphorbia obesa cluster that is looking quite alike. I kept it in a warm room during the winter two years ago. Tried to give it water just so much it wouldn't dry out during those months. I fear I had persuaded the plant to start growing. The lack of sunlight in an European winter therefor...

Re: Lesson Learned Solved

These are woody plants with a thick root stock. Mine arrived without any fibrous roots however the root stock looked healthy and the plants were starting to leaf up. Now what if they would have shipped the plant with all the roots (and some soil left?), that might turn out completely different, I g...

Re: Trichocaulon cactiforme aka larryl aka...

Oh dear...
Well, the first two summers for Larryleachia and Pseudolithos are easy to keep growing and flowering, at least!

What makes it harder the coming few years, you think, especially for Larryleachia?

Larryleachia aren't that hard, though. Just as long as you have a greenhouse to put them in and make sure they aren't too cold in winter.

Re: which compost.

Or for you British people: water it when it is cloudy for no more than 22 hours a day... I took this info from a Czech at the ELK last year. I don't know his name, but I think he is known internationally. He had a lot of Pseudolithos on sale, so I guess he knows a bit what he is doing. I was happy t...

Re: which compost.

My Pseudolithos are in a mix of about 1 part regular soil (without the big bits, though), 1 part loam, 1 part sand, 1 part fine pebbles and 1 part big pebbles. You might want to give it a bit more pebbles (or change some sand for pebbles) if you are uncertain it will dry out well. But then again, I ...

Just in the evening, all odour free all through the day? My Staplias take it easy in the evening, but during the day they seem to put up a sweat to start smelling!

Oh, that last one is pretty!

Too bad none of my Conophytums are flowering just yet. 'Only' three Lithops.
