Mammillaria luethyi
Always enjoy the blooms on this species. A few weeks earlier than last year as well. 3441B8A7-E2FF-4A2B-9EA5-073ACBCD8054.jpeg B375BC77-5AFA-42DF-B05D-88926B0E0256.jpeg 2390B06D-BD6F-4131-AEEC-8084EF65CB36.jpeg ECD562A3-04B3-4721-BD08-7A97D9677557.jpeg 0763E761-6C9A-4562-8C69-14173E5C2558.jpeg 7381C...

Re: Most painful spines
Sounds painful Iann! I had a very similar experience with Opuntia Molesta. I’m always extremely careful around that plant as a consequence

https://forum.bcss.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=170787&p=301415&hilit=vide#p301415 You could try the hot water treatment mentioned in the link above. There was also an article in CactusWorld about it a few years ago. Thanks, that sounds interesting. I will try that if this current dunk of...

Re: Pest ID please!
How long would it take to drown a mealy bug? Can they swim? [proviso! - I grow my plants in 100% pumice, so the pots will drain very quickly] Just a guess but I’d imagine because of the waxy coat they have there is likely a minute bubble layer that forms around their body enabling them to survive l...

Re: Pest ID please!
Thanks Tina, some great advice there.
I’ll have a look into those suggestions. For now I’ve left it to dry overnight as it was soaked right through after today’s battle!

Re: Pest ID please!
Thanks everyone for the replies. I’ve recently started to use cotton buds dipped in alcohol but this only seems good for targeting them and not for the ones hiding. Does anyone use a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol or is this too much for the plants? Is methylated spirits supposed to be better? An...

Re: Pest ID please!
Thanks Ed, even after a full spray of the plant with SB though I find there’s just as much mealies knocking about the next day as there was before the spray! However on closer inspection after removing the plants there are lots hiding under the pots and the rims of the pots. Ive always had the odd m...

Re: Pest ID please!
Thanks Edds, I’ve removed the effected plants outside and will hose down, check roots and spray thoroughly with SB afterwords. I too find that the chemicals available today don’t do the trick unfortunately, I’ve already doubled the dose of SB when mixing with water and still see mealies crawl off af...

Re: Pest ID please!
Thank you very much for you’re reply, I never knew the common mealy bug had males with wings and thought they were all the same! You learn something new every day! Thank you. They do indeed look like this image from the internet below.

Pest ID please!
Hello, firstly apologies for the bad photographs but these are very small and hard to get a picture. I am suspecting some type of Thrip but I’m unsure. There are hundreds of them crawling up and down the spines on most of my Lobivia / Chamaelobivia. They seem to have wings and look very much like a ...
