A flower at last - but what is it now called?
After 24 years in my hands I finally have a flower on this plant. I wonder what I have done right this year - or conversely not done right in most of the previous 23 years? maihueniopsis albisetescens2.jpg The label says Maihueniopsis albisetescens , but I really don't know much about these plants a...

Re: Cacti identification thread
I also firmly believe that the first plant is Ferocactus schwarzii. You have no need to be disappointed, it is a handsome species, and I first flowered it from seed when the stem was around 15cm diameter. I agree with David and it is indeed one of the easiest of the 'larger' Ferocacti to get to flo...

Re: Crassula arborescens not looking well
I have to first confess that I do not have one of these plants, and indeed never have had, which probably puts me in a small minority of C&S growers, so my comment does not come from experience. The fact that the leaves look shrivelled and rather bleached, and you mention that the problem "...

Re: propane heating in greenhiuse.
I agree with David Neville. For years I heated my greenhouse with a propane heater and it never caused any problems with respect to the plants. Eventually I installed an electricity supply and now run an electric heater. The reason for the change was nothing to do with the effectiveness of the gas h...

I didn't have this issue until today. What did I do last night - yes, update Windows 10! So, looks likes previous comments re. Windows 10 updates are probably correct.

Re: December Cactus world is here
My copy has still not arrived so either the post is still delayed here, or someone else has got an early Xmas present by mistake. As I have already had other people's Xmas cards delivered to me I fear it may be the latter!

Re: Which seeds did you order this year?
From ADBLPS I'm having yet another go at the two Dyckia. I went for both of them too. Are they tricky from seed? Or is it just hard to obtain viable seed? Apart from good germination with Puya venusta (BCSS seed?) about 40 years ago, then after a lengthy hiatus, I've not had any germination from an...

Re: Book found... any info?
This was also my first Cactus book, in the sense that I borrowed it constantly from my local library. Eventually my father gave me the money to buy a copy for my birthday - probably about 15 years old then. I still vividly remember going into the local bookshop and ordering a copy - especially the l...

Re: Matelea cyclophylla
For anyone not familiar with this species here are a couple of photos from my plant a few weeks ago. With regards to scent there is no need to worry, as it is imperceptible at a distance and only just apparent if you almost stick the flower up your nose!
