Re: Where can I buy cactus gravel from online?

I’ve pretty much stopped using decorative top dressing as I realised it was delaying drying of the soil. I now use a very open mix which forms its own top layer after any fines have settled a touch. There was a super ebay supplier of all sorts or aggregates, including a lovely dark volcanic grit, in...

Re: Mealy Bug

I agree, they are a pain. I’m lucky to have a professional spraying licence so I have access to several insecticides that the general public do not. I am currently rotating between four different actives....with these I have pretty much eliminated root mealies and thankfully now only see the odd abo...

Re: Small square pots

I bought recently from the Manchester BCSS source mentioned by Chris.
Excellent pots, good service. Why import, unless you are after thousands?

Re: pure pumice?

The German ebay supplier, natursteingarten, or something like that, was shipping excellent stuff. I’ve got three or four bags in store, but hope they are back in business supplying to UK soon. Even with shipping from Germany, they were cheaper than I could find in UK. Maybe a UK supplier could work ...

Re: I've never started watering in February before.

My Pterocacti got watered yesterday. Light misting has started on other cacti, but not enough to wet the soil, just the epidermis.

Re: New Cochemiea - Cochemiea tomasii

I won’t be relabelling my Mammillarias . Call me an unscientific heathen, but I like naming conventions that group similar looking plants with similar characteristics. This clumping just doesn’t float my boat, even if the molecular biology says C setispina and M fraileana both fit under Cochemiea. B...

Re: water - above or below?

I’ve never used the trays method. Watering from above feels more natural to me, but it does make a mess of furry / hairy top plants like some Lophophoras. For most, top watering presents no problems and let’s you control how much each pot gets. How do those of you with trays prevent pots standing in...

My mid-range greenhouse this week. The sun is giving plenty of heat inside.

Re: propane heating in greenhiuse.

An old recommendation was to lay some newspaper over the plants you are most concerned about to give a few degrees more protection. I’ve never tried it myself but there is logic in the idea. You don’t say how big your greenhouse is. Mine are only 120sq feet each and insulated . 1kw heaters keep thes...

Re: Guess the seedlings

Correct, ADBLPS. As you can see, they have germinated well and are growing quickly. I expect several of these will be available next year.
