I found a beauty at Southfield
I took a drive to Southfield yesterday. Hiding amongst an area of Chamaelobivia Rainbow hybrids was this little beauty. The plant Itself is nothing to write home about, but the flower colours have the shimmer and depth of some of the Schick Echinopsis hybrids such as Raoul Wallenberg or Seismic Shim...

Re: Pterocactus tuberosus
Hi John
This one was pruned hard last winter. It does tidy them up.

Re: Echinopsis hybrid Seismic Shimmer
There are a couple of Echinopsis groups on Facebook, but swaps appear infrequent. I have an almost full set of Schick hybrids myself and a number of offsets, but I don’t really like to offer them until the mother plant has bloomed for me. Sadly a few sellers provide plants under wrong names, a pain ...

Re: Echinopsis hybrid Seismic Shimmer
Lovely flowers, but it’s not Seismic Shimmer, which has deep red flowers. See http://media.huntington.org/Schick/hybr ... immer.html for the Huntington version or my one below under UK conditions.

Re: Favourite flower of all
Whilst I love my cacti and spend many happy hours in my greenhouses, these are the flowers that make my year. Sorry Mammillaria bertholdii, sorry Aztekium hintonii, sorry Echinopsis cv Fangri La. A simple Iris wins my vote.

Re: Large cactus/succulent for conservatory
You might be being a little harsh there Chris. That seller has large E grusonii for sale, I very much doubt these are top cuts. They have large Pachycereus that show characteristic signs of a narrow base, exactly what I would expect for seed grown plants. Clearly some of their plants are too cuts, t...

Re: Large cactus/succulent for conservatory
Oreocereus. They make a handsome column and won’t suffer at 5c.
I’ve got two unrooted top cuts in my greenhouse, one about three feet, the other a little shorter. But you would want well rooted plants. Mine flower from about 5 feet tall.

Big repotting job today
I’ve moved my trusty old grusonii from free root run to a very large pot today. The free root bed was getting too difficult to keep weed free after 20 years and the plants were suffering. The new pot is about 24” diameter. This particular plant is one my big sister’s boyfriend gave me when I was at ...

Disocactus macranthus?
I have this plant labelled as Disocactus macranthus. The internet shows different flower shapes for this species, some like this one, some different. What do you think, is it macranthus? Either way, it’s worth a place in any colllection. It is slightly scented, but my sense of smell could be off. Th...
