Re: Argyroderma braunsii flower
Definitely an interesting shade. I've only seen the pink ones before.

Re: weather
Lovely days, crisp frosty nights, lots of passive solar heating, have to keep an eye on those sensitive plants that burn at this time of year. Oh, and thick freezing fog last night, that was fun

Re: Tiny Avonia
Everything has germinated, Colin, except for the freebie Aylostera seed although I think I see something even there. Lithops viridis is a single microscopic green speck but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for more. Lithops comptonii, reputed to be nearly as difficult, has produced quite robust cotyle...

Re: Raising seeds in a propogator
Julie, due to my almost psychic knowledge of plant nomenclature, and the label in the pot, I can tell you that the name is Dinteranthus wilmotianus. It is closely related to Lithops, but does have a noticeable ridge on the top surface and a more bulbous shape. They are perhaps a little more difficul...
light falls off to the square of the distance
Sorry, but that's not true for any light source except a point source radiating equally in all directions. Fluorescent tubes don't fit that definition, and any source using a reflector or baffles to produce more directional light certa...

Re: Sclerocactus hard to germinate?
Pediocactus I have found to germinate over many many months, probably years if I had the patience.

Re: Sclerocactus hard to germinate?
I have found that about 20% will germinate over a few months
For the core Sclerocactus, I assume? About half of my Glandulicactus have germinated over a three day period, about one week after going in the propagator.
