Re: Trichocereus Cephalascana

I agree that the plants at Kew do not have forced growth in the winter, but a large number of plants would certainly go a lot lower than 10- 15c in the wild, hence they have potentially a longer growing season , and generally an easier existence ; Candicans has a very weak woody vascular structure ,...

Re: Trichocereus Cephalascana

Ref; the Kew Candicans , and others, are grown in warm greenhouses, and as consequence never really stop growing and can achieve atypical lengths compared to the wild , where the seasons , wind etc , keep them more compact . I have seen a few examples of Trichos , eg Chilensis that have been grown fo...

Re: Plant labels of international standards?

You can improve the "snappy" labels by spraying with matt enamel paint, or painting with matt undercoat, - just lay them out in a line and it is quite quick, this has two advantages, the paint cuts out the uv to the plastic, and makes for a better writing surface, 2b propelling pencil come...

Re: Seasonal shading Echinopsis to stop burn.

Looks like you have plenty of shade, so may be air circulation is the key,--- I think many of Oxygona types do better when grown at ground level rather than staging; post flowering, July- September they tend to do well outside, but you have to watch the snails----the trouble is temps are way to high...

Re: Imaginative greenhouses

Have you ruled out polytunnels,? I have a temp one I put up 7 years ago , as a overspill for the main greenhouse, and find it has better anti-red spider properties, but requires anti-condensation precautions in the cooler months; but only works out cheaper if you buy a large one

Re: Trichocereus Cephalascana

Looking at the Roger Ferryman photos, it looks like two of the plants have reddish flowers, just to add to the problems of studying this group

Re: No name Echinopsis

The long spines may be accounted for by Madrid having slightly more sun than England, --- I have seen plants growing in Tenerife that had far longer , and denser spines ,than those growing in habitat ;the idea of moving somewhere you can grow plants outside appeals to me greatly

Re: No name Echinopsis

could be Obrepanda, but spines seem rather long and fine, or Obrepanda x Ferox,----the actual size of the flower would help

Looks fine as a Rosarioana to me , it is basicly a small growing form of Formosa , not so closely related to Bruchi
