Re: Melocactus repotting query
I haven't had any bad experiences with repotting of plants, including Melocactus. I always remove all the soil, and brush remains off of the roots with a brush. The only bad experiences I had was with mesembs. They can start to rot when you apply too soon water after repotting. I don't think Melocac...

Catching flies has to be as difficult as swatting them... I think you can place some rotting meat under a big screen, and lower the screen when you think you have gathered enough flies? Place your Larryleachia under the screen too, and let them play for a while. Although begin a vegetarian,...

Re: Another use for cat litter?
I don't mind them walking around at all. But if they are being too enthusiastic with carrying soil around (specifically, throwing it out the pot and undermining my plant) I am a bit more bottered. Then I prefer to gently repot the plant and let the ants play outside and look for a new place to dig t...

Re: Another use for cat litter?
I just recently discovered that in three larger Ferocactus plants that I haven't repotted a long time ago, there is an ants nest. I assume the sugary sap from the Ferocactus is partly to blame attracting them. Now, I haven't had much experience with ant problems. And once I did, a (small) plant was ...
