Re: Nothing last for ever!!

I still have loads of BEF pots from the 1980s. The terracotta coloured ones rarely deteriorate but the green ones started to go after about 20 years. I don't know the difference in composition between them.

Re: Any idea what these are?

Have you sprayed it with anything lately? I have noticed that some cacti, Soehrensia huascha springs to mind, produce dark blisters after treatment with insecticide. Something to do with the alkaloids in the epidermis if I remember correctly.

Re: A year in a box?

I was thinking the opposite Phil that the more dessicated they will be, up to a point, the better. Maybe I'll try both ways to hedge my bets.

A year in a box?

It looks like our planned move to Shetland will go ahead in the autumn, barring unforseen problems. I've already disposed of a good number of my plants and now it's just the Lobivia/Echinopsis and Gymnocalyciums left. I'm planning on boxing these up and taking them with me. They will have to stay in...

Re: Are you going to water your cacti

Yes, that's true Karl, I can't explain it. Maybe it's only cacti from high altitudes, but I'm convinced for the cacti genera I grow there are two growing seasons, spring and autumn with some growth in the summer when conditions are favourable (cooler nights).

Re: Are you going to water your cacti

Hi, I tend to water late in the day, as the Sun is going down. This gives the water time to reach the roots? and the plants time to take it up, but it may not work that way. Mel. I believe that it is high night time temperatures that cause cacti to shut down, not high day time temperatures, so it w...

Are you going to water your cacti

Are you going to water your cacti during the upcoming hot weather? I think it's a complete waste of time, they just shut down when night time temperatures are in the high teens and above. It seems counter intuitive but I believe it to be true. 40C forecast on the BBC weather app for Southend on Mond...

Re: CITES protected?

I know of one UK nursery that openly sells habitat collected caudiciforms Stuart. Best if I don't name it though, could possibly be seen as libelous.
