Inflorescence height above leaf tips
7th 8am 115cm
.... 8pm 122cm
8th 8am 125.5cm
.... 8pm 131cm
10th 8am 142cm = 27cm in 3 days
17th 8am 173cm another 21cm in a week, so slowing down. Perhaps with cooler temperatures; it doesn't seem to be anywhere near its final height, judging by the appearance of the top of the inflorescence.

The buds are slowly enlarging.

The lowest buds are single rather than doubles. They still don't look anywhere near ready to open.

Looking good, I wonder if it will/can wait until next year if we don't get some nice sunny days

26th 8am 181cm = 8cm in 9 days - so even before today's drop in temperature, slowing down a lot compared to 7cm in 12 hours back on the 7th.
So a definite doubt, Tina, as to whether I'll have any flowers opening this year.
The buds don't look very different today to the photo of the 17th. But look more closely at the bud size in proportion to the stem diameter or the filaments, and they definitely are growing.
buds-4.JPG
The leaf tips at the base of the inflorescenc are 38cm above the compost level. So the inflorescence height above soil level is 219cm. Must get the stepladders out.
I noticed on Saturday that the buds on the top 15cm had dried up.
inflor_4.JPG
I hadn't been watering in the recent dry weather. There has been some light rain, but the leaves cover pretty much all of the pot surface, keeping rain out. I did give a good soaking once I spotted the problem. 48 hours later this morning's downpour made sure that nothing was left at all dry.

Must remember in future to water flowering Agaves once the flower spike gets up to around 2 metres.

It's opening time.

On Wednesday (13th) the buds looked slightly longer but otherwise much the same. So I was surprised to see several flowers opened the next day.
Photos taken Thursday (14th)

The sequence seems to be that the petals open...

...then the filaments unfurl, pushing the anthers out.
No pollen yet.
stamens extruded.JPG
I thought the anthers would open today (I presume they split along the longitudinal groove) to reveal the pollen, but still waiting. The stigmas look as if they won’t be ready for some time yet.

The flowers are getting plenty of attention from wasps. There seem to be several seeking nectar every time I look. They tend to crawl from flower to flower underneath the anthers, avoiding contact with the pollen except when first arriving.

The flowering zone is spreading up the stem.
inflorescence__.JPG
The anthers open, producing their pollen. The stigmas seem to develop a few days later. I've tried pollinating, so waiting to see whether it seems to be self fertile. There does seem to be some swelling of the ovaries on the lower flowers.

The main rosette is looking noticeably paler and more yellow. The offsets are a little less green , but the change is much less obvious. Gives me some hope that the offsets may survive.

Excellent photo series.

No visible cold damage yet from the chilly nights?
