Cactus ID?
Just back from Lanzarote (photos of my trip another day!), I was wondering what this cactus is that I bought (without a label) at the Flower Power garden centre in Macher (worth a visit if you're in the area).
Many thanks for your suggestions!

Mainly cacti, with a preference for Mexican ones, but I'm flexible!

Re: Cactus ID?
HI,
It looks to me to be Hamatocactus (now Ferocactus) hamatacanthus, though I didn't know it flowered on a relatively young plant. But in Canarian sunshine, I guess it is possible.

Re: Cactus ID?
I went to Lanzarote too at the same time as you I guess. I visited the the Cactus garden to the north of the island. I didn't know about the one in Macher.
Here are some I took.

Re: Cactus ID?
Are there any restrictions on bringing these things back into the country?

Re: Cactus ID?
Flowering at such a small size, I would suspect the plant is Ferocactus hamatacanthus ssp. sinuatus (or Hamatocactus if you prefer).

Re: Cactus ID?
Yes I think Werewolf is on the money, ssp.sinuatus will flower in 3 to 4 years from seed, and that plant looks like it has been fast grown, going by the distance between the areoles.

Re: Cactus ID?
Gran Canaria has at least one wellknown cactus nursery: Cactualdea in the northwest. There is also a big garden center near Puerto Mogan that usually has a lot of cacti for sale. Ordinary flower shops also stock some cacti and it´s possible to make some surprising finds there! Enjoy your trip!
Growing mostly globular, smallgrowing cacti north of Stockholm
