Re: My collection in Finland
Today the three small opuntias (O. fragilis 'Füssen') growing outdoors in my rockery have more than 100 buds! Last winter was their fourth winter without any protection. This winter was very cold in Finland (between -20 and -30 Celsius for several weeks), but there was a lot of snow protecting the plants. Originally I planted four opuntias in 2015, but in spring 2018 they looked so bad that I removed one opuntia. However, I discovered very soon that it was a mistake. Like in previous years, the black and soft opuntias became hard and green by May.

Amazing that your plants can survive in such icy conditions, look forward to seeing the flowers when they open.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading through this thread, great plants and I’m fascinated by the hardiness of your Opuntia fragilis Fussen. I really hope to find the same plant as I’d love to try and grow it outside here in the UK.

Here are pictures showing the flowering of three small opuntias outdoors in a rockery this year. Beacause one flower only lasts for 1-2 days, all of the 100 flowers were not open on the same day.
