Ah, the "low dust" one that's never available in nearby stores or online. Next time!

Re: pure pumice?
The last few times I've ordered "cat litter" I've ordered oil spill granules from eBay or Euro Car Parts.

Re: pure pumice?
Is growing in pumice better than growing in akadama? What is the difference, not counting price. Can I mix akadama with potting compost and at what ratio. Or can I try akadama on it's own? Any advi e welcome, thank you.

Re: pure pumice?
CactusCat, from my experience akadama is heavier, holds more water, is softer so roots can go through it, this means it can break down a bit over time, it can also break down if it’s outside in cold temperatures but it’s ok indoors. Akadama is easier to tell when it’s wet because it changes colour. It also makes a hissing noise when you water really dry akadama. Being a consistent brown colour means mealybugs are easily spotted.
I should say I haven’t tried moler/cat litter so that might be a cheaper option to start with too
Edit: I forgot to say I did try Ikea pumice but didn’t like it as it was very small and a bit sharp. The stuff I just bought, I put the link earlier in this thread, feels better and is a better size but I haven’t used it yet.
Some other suppliers were mentioned too, I don’t know how theirs compares.

Re: pure pumice?
Thank you, I'm aware of it, just don't have space and need for 20l of it, hence my hunt for the Tesco stuff. Which apparently doesn't make much sense anymore as it's same size as Sanicat now. I need to find something appropriate for my seeds!Chris L wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 10:38 pmThe last few times I've ordered "cat litter" I've ordered oil spill granules from eBay or Euro Car Parts.

Based on your description of akadama, moler clay is a harder equivalent, maybe with a tad less consistent colour.

The front page of their website says you can only pick it up from the Woking nursery site by appointment but you need your own bags. But that might not have been updated since 2016.

I use pumice for rooting Adromischus leaves and for anything that I think might be slow to root. As well as Bob, the other nursery that has pumice is Carlos at Woodside in Lincolnshire.

I thought this ad from the second issue of The Cactus Journal in December 1932 might be of interest. The supplier describes the use of the Clayburn in an article on page 37. https://www.cactuspro.com/biblio/en:csjgb

Wow, just only pumice?Stuart wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 11:25 pm I've been growing all my Haworthias and most Gasterias in pure pumice for the past few years, all from Bob Potter. Bob used to sell a half-full bin liner for about £10. They seem to have much better roots in pumice than anything else. The Haworthia Cooperi Truncata in the photo had no roots last September and was only watered once in October.
