Small agave - I tried to find a colour co-ordinated pot as this utahensis lives at my flat 👍

Astro wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2020 3:43 pm This is a hand crafted pot. I like the texture and the slightly asymmetric shape. I tried to plant several different things in it, but they were all either too small or too big, so eventually I just left the Haworthia in it.
Hi Astro,

Love the pot.😀😀

However, being the pedantic President that I am, current taxonomy results in a different name for your plant, so this is now Haworthiopsis limifolia as of 2013.

Hi Matt,

This is absolutely the best form of A. utahensis often recognised as var. eborispina, the name of which means ivory-coloured for the tusk-like spines.

Great combination of plant and pot.

I am now getting into succulent bonsai in a serious way.

I've just done my first online shop for bonsai pots and here's what's just arrived.

The largest pot shown here is 26 cm across and I've just done my first proper bonsai. The root system of this Crassula ovata has been reduced by around a third. This has then been wired into the pot using proper plastic coated bonsai wire.

Here's the finished result. The plant doesn't look great right now since it's been dry for 5 months

The shape could also be improved with some pruning. The plant had grown lopsided in the GH since yet again I'd omitted to turn it around. But I suppose it might be seen as having a bit of a wind swept look?
Cheers,
Colin

Very interesting Colin, C. ovata seems a good sort of plant to try and it will be interesting to see its progress. I don't think I'll be joining you, keeping plants repotted into normal pots is a job enough!

OK am I wrong - there is a third way. First was you grew plants to try and retain their characteristics in habitat, and obsessed with field collection numbers and pedigree. Second you went for variants and hybrids and grew what you thought could be attractive and sellable.

The third way is now you bonsai the plants, you castrate their growth. You cut, cut and constrain.

Like the pots Colin & the crassula isn't bad, needs a bit more top trimming, I have a few Golums in Bonsai pots I need to get you a photo.
I may go & torture them a bit first
