Topic: Peter Beresford – Echinocereus USA

Peter’s father introduced him to cacti in his early teens, but it wasn’t until he joined the BCSS and visited Cambridge branch that the hobby really took off. It was several more years before his first trip to habitat in March 1997 with newly found Dutch Echinocereus friend Jos Huizer. This adventure, without the aid of any new-fangled GPS equipment took them around Arizona and New Mexico. In 1998 he joined two members from Cambridge to visit Northern Mexico – the first of several to that country. On a couple of occasions Peter even ventured to Chile and Peru in the company of Paul Hoxey. When Roy Mottram retired and Al Laius took over the editor role at the BCSS, Peter assumed the role of Deputy Editor helping on the slightly trickier foreign authored articles. He has also contributed many articles to several journals not the least of which being CactusWorld.

This talk on ‘Echinocereus USA’ draws on Peter’s travels in the USA which over the years have extended from California to the southern tip of Texas on the Gulf Coast. The talk is a virtual trip following the same direction and looking at all 55 flowering Echinocereus species or subspecies enroute with distribution maps showing the counties in which they can be found.

Where speakers are putting together new talks specifically for online meetings, please can they be encouraged to steer clear of animated slide transitions? They're of questionable value in in-the-flesh meetings but online the increased data demand can really spoil the talk if the presenter or viewer has anything other than a very fast internet connection.

Yes, please no transitions anymore!
When transitions are used I always see the slides corresponding to any spoken information only when the presenter has already moved over to the next slide. The slides I see always run behind. And the sound usually breaks up too. It has caused me to just quit on the presentation a few times in the last year.
