The Ruta National 40 is the most southern part of the famous "Panamericana". It crosses Argentina from north to south following the range of the Andes on 5301 km. Even though large stretches have been paved and extended in recent decades, there are still a number of difficult-to-navigate stretches. One such section is over the Abra del Acay, one of the highest road passes in the world at 4950 m. Along this adventure road we look for cacti and other natural beauties.

Ian is a geologist and cartographer whose interest in cacti started as a teenager. He is currently a committee member of ELK and the Mammillaria Society and has previously held various roles at Branch level in the BCSS. As well as having written numerous articles on cacti and other succulents he has spoken widely throughout the UK and internationally. Having taken the opportunity of voluntary redundancy he and his wife are now installed in Norfolk, at what was Eau Brink cactus nursery. He has been fortunate enough to travel widely throughout the Americas in search of plants in habitat to photograph and study. These travels have included many trips to the United States and northern Mexico where Pediocactus and Sclerocactus grow.

This talk is a light-hearted look at some of the highlights encountered. A brief introduction to the genera is followed by pictures of plants in habitat, many in flower, as well as a number of the other plants and animals that accompany them, some of the eclectic occurrences stumbled across and of course the stunning scenery. Hopefully, there will be something of interest for everyone. Seeing plants in habitat is a special privilege and Ian is looking forward to sharing some of these with you.

From what I understood it's more an occasional treat, than a rule unfortunately. Not every speaker likes to be recorded.

Patience, we are trying to get speakers ATM I don't want to scare them off or have to learn how to use face book streaming or wot ever it is .

Born in the Netherlands, Paul won his first cactus show at school in 1959. His Opa (Grandad) gave him his first subscription to Succulenta, the Dutch cactus and succulent society, as a birthday present in 1963. He moved with his family from the Netherlands to Denmark where his collection continued to grow, under artificial lights. Upon moving again, to the UK, Paul joined the British Cactus and Succulent Society (BCSS), and not long after found himself in the role of Secretary of BCSS Crawley Branch before he finally settled in Wiltshire in 2003. Paul is well travelled and has had many trips to see plants in habit.

Paul’s talk promises to take us through an exciting journey through Madagascar which he undertook in 2016. An island with a very varied and unique fascinating fauna and flora, more than 80% of Madagascar's 14,883 plant species are found nowhere else in the world, including five plant families.
