I mocked up a page on Reddit that the society might be able to use in the future https://www.reddit.com/r/bcss there are quite a few pages on the site like https://www.reddit.com/r/succulents and https://www.reddit.com/r/cactus that are popular and could be a way to get new members.

Reddit works better on a smartphone with the Reddit app if you do have a look.

Other names are available too if the name bcss isn’t right and the site/app is free to use
Plant sales: www.CentralSucculents.etsy.com
Instagram: www.instagram.com/CentralSucculents
Reddit: www.reddit.com/u/CentralSucculents

All my plants are kept indoors and I started collecting in August 2018. Favourites are Pachyphytum, Echeveria, Haworthia, Mesembs and oddball Cacti.

I would mention the new subreddit on https://www.reddit.com/r/uksucculents/ as well, although a crossover between r/succulents and this forum is probably there already.

With regard to the app I recommend "Reddit is fun" (now "rif" or "rif is fun" due to some legalities around the name). It's smaller and cleaner than the official one, also doesn't send notifications, which might be a + or - for some.

I have recently spoken with Bill and with the fragile nature of our existing web site he has not been able to make the RSS feed work satisfactorily.

What has probably not been communicated clearly is that we are proposing to use a new Facebook page for this which will be viewable by anyone whether or not you have a FB profile. Its the easiest free platform that we can use to promote the BCSS.

We are so very short of helpers that this is probably the only place that we can display the entries unless I get a volunteer prepared to upload all the entries perhaps onto the forum. Depending on the number of entries this may be a big or small job.

At the moment the BCSS does not have any experience of Reddit and cannot commit to spread its resources even thinner in managing and moderating this platform. I would like to think that we could could expand over time but this does depend on whether people come forward to help. We do need to make sure that any promotion is appropriately branded

Unfortunately there are so few people on the ground helping it does feel like I am constantly fighting an up hill battle.

As I have said in my letter to members the plan was to use this virtual show to promote the BCSS who at the moment are losing members and with no events we are not able to promote and publicise the society. I have people working and trying to get the new web site over the hill and I hope that this along with direct debits will help stem the issue of members not renewing their subscriptions.

Please help me and support the show but even better talk to me if you think you could spare some time to help grow the BCSS.

Thanks

Ian

Ian I'm by no means an expert but have been admin on a couple of different fora in the past and administer my school's website.

I'd be happy to either help set up something on the forum or on a page on the website if wanted.

Maybe another alternative would be an RSS feed to bring the posts from Facebook onto the society website - we have this set up on our school website to save duplicating work. Again happy to help if I can.
Edds did offer

Having now explained that the FB page can be viewed by anyone I wouldn't want to take someone up on their offer when the circumstances may have changed. If Edds still wants to set it up on he forum we can make that happen.

This is what comes up on my browser within 5 seconds of going to the facebook page. Yes, I can click "not now" but if I then click on another page it pops back up again.

Not wanting anything to do with facebook it kind of puts me off looking at it.

I'm back at work full time but still have some time evenings and weekends (until the PM's next crazy announcement anyway) to help out. Ian, I'm happy to help in other ways if it would be more productive than simply replicating something on here if you are struggling for volunteers. Please send me a PM if so.

I have already volunteered to upload images to zenfolio which does allow access to most devices, depending on upload speed I could also upload to forum but not sure how it could be structured/controlled

Thanks Edds and Jim,

We will take up one of these offers and get back to you.

Chris L - it will not be on the normal FB group as you do need an account and to be approved to gain entry.

Kind regards
Ian

I wasn't sure where to post this but the following link on the society home page doesn't go to //cwl, instead it just reloads the home page.
