That's interesting, thanks iann :) I've seen some people say that their caudex stops growing if at all exposed to light, so to know they naturally grow a little exposed is reassuring.

It's a long shot, but maybe there is a forgotten A. quinaria (any and all subspecies are welcome) seed packet laying in someone's cupboard/freezer?
