I'm having yet another go at the two Dyckia.
I went for both of them too. Are they tricky from seed? Or is it just hard to obtain viable seed?
Apart from good germination with Puya venusta (BCSS seed?) about 40 years ago, then after a lengthy hiatus, I've not had any germination from any bromeliads I've tried in the last 5 years, so I'm keen to get better results this time.

From Elisabeth & Norbert Sarnes came some austrocacti - of course - inc. aonikenkensis (which i've previously germinated but then killed) and nobilis plus some 'sp.' that I liked the look of (illustrated seed catalogues are perfect for picking plants from the unknown). [...]
This is the best seed list I have seen to date (which means out of maybe 6), super useful and with beautiful photographs!

In general, thank you for such detailed shopping list, sometimes I wonder why people choose what they do, or whether my selection makes any sense - after some more reading I probably won't be able to germinate some, but I consider it my "fun budget" anyway!

I have tried occasional Dyckia seed (probably about 4 times) and I have failed completely to get any germinations. So, either seed viability is an issue, or I am at fault in putting them with my cacti seed pots and treating them the same?

Collection mainly of cacti, though interested in a much wider variety of plants than I can accommodate!

Have you retried the same pots again too? That might do the trick for some species, a retry one, two or three years later and in the mean time keeping the pots with seeds in the greenhouse both in summer and in winter.

Nooooooooooo! I know fraileas are always recommended for those with little space but I don't need encouraging to fill my remaining space! But if I get a taste for them I'll bear it in mind. Thanks

I did germinate some I bought from a USA seller via ebay a few years ago. Germination was reasonable though I let them dry out too early and lost most of them, leaving just two survivors. I think viability is the main issue - whether that's because they need sowing swiftly or because, through lack of demand, sellers tend to stock very old seed I can't say. Alan (Ali Baba) sent me some fresh-as-a-daisy seed from one of his plants and none germinated. He reckoned that they just produce duds sometimes (Can you elaborate, if you read this?). Some Puya and some Deuterocohnia/Abromeitiella that I had from Ralf Hillmann last year has germinated well in most cases (with some 0% alongside including some Dyckia)

You're welcome! It was useful to reflect on why I'd bought what I have, and already there are a few "Why on earth did I buy that?" on the list!

No, they seem ideal bedfellows for cactus seedlings and do well in the same conditions... if they germinate.
