Neolloydia?

Post by fatich »

I bought the seeds as Neolloydia conoidea a few years ago. They look like this now. Are they really Neolloydia or different species?
They should be bigger now but they're little bit neglected.

I seem to remember mine being more spiky, too when I grew them from seed a couple of years ago...

In the first picture they look more like Mammillaria herrerae seedlings.
If I recall correctly those grew a bit tall for me in the first two years.

Today i was checking up on my Mexico photos i saw this Neolloydia conoidea photo. I think my seedlings might look like this when they matured.
I took this photo in a place between Rayones and Galleana.

There are (at least) two different forms of Neolloydia conoidea. One has central spines, and the other doesn't. Sometimes that one is called grandiflora. I've seen both forms in habitat and they certainly look rather different, though its the central spined form that I've seen as seedlings, and they do have centrals even when relatively young. Its a very variable species, which is not surprising as its range starts in Texas and comes south to Guanajuato and Queretaro, well over 500 miles.
