Mesemb seedlings

Post by AndrewB »

Hi all,

Over the last few years I have tried raising some Mesembs from seed, some of the results can be seen in these photos.

Nicely grown ... and nicely labelled and presented
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

The perennial problem I have is a lack of space so this kind of thing just makes it worse.

So far I've managed by ordering a larger shoehorn annually.

Now I have no space to store the shoe horns :???:

Now to get out the propagator for this year's seed

I'm trying to find a supplier for skyhooks.
I said I was not going to order seeds this year ..... no hope
I said I was not going to collect and grow my own seeds .... no hope.
I said I was not going to accept plants or seeds from ANY source .... no hope.
I had a new propagation unit as a birthday present .... makes worse ... it's in a temporary home being frowned upon.
I see gorgeous pictures of seedlings .... and plants ... and it's trouble .... again.

Great stuff again Andrew (and others) it is addictive stuff - some succulents grow so fast the space issues get critical much sooner!

Edds, you can plant those A. tabulaeforme(?) plants in a vertical wall, sideways, so that should save some of your space problem!

That is part of the plan! Pipes ready for them to be planted in! Will still have few spare for the Sedum Society exchange though!

Hi,

Thanks for your comments.

As you can probably imagine, there have been a lot of unsuccessful attempts as well. My last two years of seed sowing have been almost disastrous in their poor results. I will certainly not be trying a thick layer of vermiculite, with seeds sown on top, again.
