Recently acquired these two interesting plants.
On the left is Dudleya groma S.W.McCabe
On the right is Haworthia 'karnen butokai'

The Dudleya is endemic to Santa Rosa island one of the channel islands off California. Only about 3,000 plants are left in the wild and are protected. My plant has been seed raised. It seems to be enjoying live in the ceramic dish.

The Haworthia is a comptoniana hybrid from Asia.

Has anyone else grown this Dudleya? anything I need to be mindful of.
BTW The dish is one of many I bought from Tina. Has a hole in the bottom for drainage.
I am okay with how to look after the Haworthia, I had a large collection of them in the recent past. A number of members of this forum bought them.

I think it is D. gnoma, not groma. Yes, I grow it. It doesn't seem to present any real difficulty. I happily grew it as a summer grower until Terry Smale told us all that they are winter growers. I'm now treating it as a winter grower, and it still seems happy. However, I'd try to avoid letting the leaves get wet / stay wet in winter, as that can cause botrytis in plants like these and Echeverias.

I have a Gnoma and the stem is more woody and seems really slow growing, I just wondered what the white stem was on yours Ernie, is it the start of a flower?

I also wanted to ask what the soil was for it and also your crassula? I remember you had a really good one before.

Hi. Thank you for the nice comment re my Crassula plant. C. Namaquensis. That plant and the Dudleya are growing in a very open mixture of 50% premium J.I. number 2 and 50% grit. I find this suits all my plants going back nearly 50 years. Free draining and much like what they grow in in habitat.
It look like the Dudleya is about to do its thing. Checked this morning and I don't think it will be long. I will post a picture later. A plant that according to research is very tolerant of drought and high temperatures. It wont have that problem in this country.

The Dudleya is in peril in habitat, declared to be close to extinction. Thankfully it is available commercially, at a price. I think I paid too much for mine from a well known UK supplier but it is a very nice plant and if we want something badly enough we have to be prepared to pay.
