DKG, great response for new members

Post by Paul D »

I've just rejoined the DKG (Deutsche Kakteen Gesellschaft) after a few years lapse. I was very impressed by the response. Straight away, an acknowledgement by email for my payment; followed by an email telling me welcome, and confirming my details; and then a mere 5 days later, a package in the post from Germany containing the last 3 issues of their journal, plus a welcoming letter from their Secretary, a welcoming letter from President, a directory of phone numbers and addresses, a booklet of tips for growing cacti and succulents, the group's constitution, and a bunch of DKG stickers.
I can't fault that as a really first class response to a new member, the chief among them being the speed. Brilliant! Well done, DKG.

I'll second that, but it's ongoing too, not just when you join. Whenever I have ordered one of their occasional publications, the response from Heike Schmidt, the lady in charge, has always been first class, both prompt and just as requested.

The membership is worth it just for the chance to buy those publications - never mind the 12 journals a year too.

Yeh but I speak google
I take a photo of a page, upload it to free character recognition at https://www.onlineocr.net/, copy the text produced, paste it into google translate, bingo. Whole page translated in about a minute.

Have you seen the google translate app? I only used to use it at work for translating a few words for reading floorplans but it’s pretty amazing. You can get a real time translation through your phone camera (I guess tablet too although I haven’t tried). Not the best if there are pages and pages of text but it might save some time if you just want a quick translation.

Looking at this random page in the Bradleya

The app can translate to numerous languages (Not sure how well) this is the view you get on screen English to German. The text is straighter if you’re more careful lining it up.

All my plants are kept indoors and I started collecting in August 2018. Favourites are Pachyphytum, Echeveria, Haworthia, Mesembs and oddball Cacti.

Perhaps I should put my German skills to the test.
Long time since I did any tech translation.
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

New plant names published by Resonde During his research career, Resende published many new plant names and new combinations. De most of them were for taxa in the Asfodelaceae subfam. Alooideae and two for taxa in the Crassulaceae (Table 1). However, some of the nouns Nova were not validly published. In both Haworthiopsis téssellata as Haworthla tessellata) unist Haworthlopsis Ilmifolla tas Haworthia limitolla) numerous new species and forms are published. None of these are accepted today except for Alolampelos ciliaris nothovar. Gigas (see above), the only four entities that Resende has described that can be maintained today, albeit in a different genus, are the nothotaxa Haworthiopsis Xhenriquesli, Haworthiopsis xlisbonensis. Haworthiopsis Xsampaiana, and Haworthiopsis Xsampaiana var brotoriana (Smith & Silva, 2019). New synonyms Aloiampelos striatula var. Caesia (Reynolds) Klop per & Gideon Fomin Phytotax (2013).
