Agave

Post by John E »

I got this plant from Kakteen Katz 20 years ago as Agave victoria-reginae. Can somebody furnish me with the correct name or is it just a worthless hybrid? Avoid looking at the surrounding tat.

Looks OK to me, John, I don’t think it’s a hybrid. Nice plant!

It could be Agave victoriae-reginae f. nickelsiae which I think has longer more pointed leaves than the standard victoria-reginae. Agave Ferdinand-Regis is also a possibility.

A couple of questions:
Why do you think the name is wrong?
Why would changing the label (to a hybrid) make the plant worthless? It's the same plant. Plenty of forum members willing to give it a home, I'm sure - me for one.

What makes you think it's a hybrid? There's a lot of variation when you look at photos of wild plants.

There are also some new species and subspecies described recently such as pintilla and nickelsiae as species and ssp.swobodae

Thanks for the answers. It just did not look right for A.victoria-reginae and I do not really follow the more recent Agave news.

This is a victoria-reginae I bought from Abbey Brook which I'd say looks fairly similar to yours.

Look right to me I have seen ones that are more tightly growing and ones like yours but they are all same plants
