Mammillaria haudeana

Post by Mark07 »

I’ve found this plant to grow very quickly for me, almost tripling in size in under two years. This one is on its own roots and so far I’ve not found it particularly hard to care for considering what I’ve read about it being hard to keep alive (hopefully I’ve not jinxed myself now :D). Quite a few early flower buds now appearing too.

It’s labelled as “Mammillaria haudeana S of Yecoza” I can’t find much info on that complete name unless it is just a regular mammillaria saboae ssp. haudeana?

South of Yecora is the location of the original habitat material for your plant, no reason from the label to think it's anything other than typical for the (sub)species :

Lovely plant, Mark, well done!

But now, in Graham Evans' fine review of a recent DNA study,in totday's Cactus & Succulent Review, he tells us that we should now be calling this
Cochemiea saboae subsp. haudeana but does add
"Will you be changing your labels? That's entirely up to you!"
My mammillaria plants will be remainhg as mammillarias!

I've just been rereading Molecular phylogeny of the Mammilloid clade (Cactaceae) resolves the monophyly of Mammillaria yesterday and was wondering where saboae was going to end up. They'd included guelzowiana in their study but none, so far as I could see, of the straight-spined plants with big flowers. I hadn't noticed saboae and theresae in the list of plants already in Cochemiea - I skipped the list thinking it was just the things with big red flowers. You have to admire Alexander Doweld's remarkable ability to see things that the rest of us can't! Yes, he makes some odd combinations but his foresight is often spot-on, in this case publishing Cochemiea saboae over 20 years ago.

Thanks Tony! Interesting! But yes I agree, mine will also remain labelled as Mammillarias :)

Super flowers
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.
