Coccineus means 'scarlet'. 2 of mine; the first could reasonably be said to fit the name

The other wouldn't fit my definition of scarlet. SB236 from Mesa Gardens; from memory Steve Brack listed this as variable flower colour in the catalogue.

SB236 and AG11 are both from the same area in the Jarilla Mountains. I've seen white flowered plants from this population but they seem to be uncommon and I haven't had any in this batch of seed so far.

Cinitia doesn't take much warmth to open its flowers.

SB 236 does seem to be the most common collection number of E. coccineus but also the most variable.
I can't say I have seen AG 11 before.

It was on the society seedlist, but quite a few years ago now. This year's list also had a few E. coccineus variants.

Sunshine and showers today but these have opened and they'll stay open now. Apparently hummingbirds like to feed at dusk so not a good idea to close your flowers at night when you're trying to attract them.

I wonder if those Neoporteria flowers fluoresce? They seem very bright compared to the rest of the dull picture.
