Rebutia marsoneri?

Post by Mike »

These two are from BCSS seed of two years ago that was listed as 'Rebutia aff. marsoneri'.
Is there any reason to believe they are anything other than R. marsoneri?

I am definitely not wise, but I am puzzled by the flower colour as according to Pilbeam’s book marsoneri has yellow flowers, as do the various clones of marsoneri in my collection. ( however kariusiana with pink flowers is supposedly a sport of marsoneri).
A couple of years ago I crossed marsoneri with kariusiana and the seedlings had red flowers ! Curious

Rebutia marsoneri normally has a yellow flower, although red forms can be found. One way to tell marsoneri (and krainziana which is related) from R senilis which is the most likely alternative is that R marsoneri is self-sterile, while R senilis is self-fertile. So, at the end of the year, see if you have any seed pods (making sure to keep insects away).
