That's interesting to know even if they sound disgusting I have a few little ones of these, supposed to be Bonsai material but they are in the ground now.

Certainly the ones planted by the Council are all male. They don't want to have to clean up the stinky fruit.

There are females available (some nurseries grow them from seed), especially for those who want the highly-valued and tasty nuts. In China, you get specific varieties bred for bigger or better nuts.

If you take vitamin B6 with them, the nuts are hardly toxic at all.

I really want to try these, they're supposed to be very tasty.

Anyway, no pollen made by these lobivias.

But as there are no flowers with only male parts I guess they're neither monoecious nor dioecious. Is there a hemi- or pseudo- or somethingelse-ecious?

Gynodioecious, if I understand correctly from this recent article on In Defense of Plants:
https://www.indefenseofplants.com/blog/ ... ultivation

There are, of course, androdioecious plants that have either male-only or male/female flowers.

It took me a good few days to finally try it, the smell was so strong and unpleasant, but if you manage to bite, chew and then swallow it... it's heaven (especially when the smell is gone)!

I've got a seed grown one and a variegated one - both are too small to have flowered yet so no idea of gender. Will be interesting to see!

Gynodioecious means that some flowers have both male and female parts and some flowers only female. Functional gynodioecy means that some flowers are both male and female while some flowers appear to have both male and female parts but actually only the female parts work. Gynodioecy is quite rare but does occur in some cacti.
