My thought process during Euphorbia stellaspinas growth

Here's my Euphorbia that I got from Bob Potter last year.

I noticed these pink things coming out, and my first thought was that they might be flowers.

They were very soft and bendy.

Then, a week later they started to get harder, so I started to think they were going to be spines.

And lastly, the thing that completely threw me off, was this weird development. Is it a flower or spine or both?

Hopefully you can see, but on the left spine, it split open producing another spine?!

Yes, the new "spines" are red before turning grey by the following year.
It's Euphorbia stellispina rather than stellaespina these days, I think?

Here is one of many I saw near Beaufort West.
