You might have a mealy bug or two in that pot as well! I have no experience with Ariocarpus, but I've learned quite the hard way that cacti roots can be quite squishy when dehydrated, which makes sense really.

I'd go for a Nick replacement if I was you, he has good tough plants and leave this one to slowly expire or not.
