Perhaps they had Huernia hystrix by one of the old names - Huernia appendiculata.

This is a favourite, Orbea gilbertii . Has a bit of an odour though.

It is very much like. Perhaps more like it than Huernia humilis, presumably a hybrid with Huernia plowesii. Stapeliads.net has this quote for Huernia plowesii:
Cute, whatever the name is.The anulus opening is pentagonal . Not so in H. humilis.
