Parodia subterranea

Post by Astro »

I have only 2 Parodia s.s. in my collection, and both are subterraneas I sowed 6 or 7 years ago. They're by far my favorite Parodias - very neat, compact and with a lovely contrast between the body, the spines and the flowers. I have been looking for flowers for the past year or two, and it looks like both will finally oblige this year.

Funnily enough, one seedling has straight spines and the other has hooked spines.

Here is one in a 2.5" (6.5 cm) pot:

(tu)
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

I have just sown some Parodia species this spring, including P. subterranea. I can only wish mine will look like this in a few years' time.

Do you have locality data for both species, by any chance?

Both are from the same seed batch, ex ADBLPS. Parodia subterranea FR_731 > La Cueva/Chuquisaca/Bolivia ex MG 1143.602.

Thanks. I was expecting two different localities.
