I would never have guessed this to be a Melocactus too. But a the background does not seem out of place for a Copiapoa? I know them to be coastal plants, usually on cliffs next to the water taking advantage of the water vapour, for many pictures I can remember having seen of Copiapoas. Still it looks more like an Echinocactus or Parodia to me...

Interesting article Terry. Some of my colleagues in my research group Cardiff University worked on nonphotorealistic rendering - computer algorithms that take in a photo, and automatically re-render it in an "artistic" style.
Below are one or two results from one of my photos; if anyone else wants to try, you can upload your own photos at

I couldn't work out what it was when I first saw it either... even though it was me who'd done the layout for Paul's article!

My colleagues did this quite a while before deep learning became fashionable. Indeed Paul Rosin, the main chap, has even co edited a book about it:MatDz wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 12:06 am This is really interesting Ralph, thank you for sharing! I didn't read the details, but it feels very similar to the style transfer in deep learning area: https://www.tensorflow.org/tutorials/ge ... e_transfer

But I suspect we are now getting a bit far from C&S...
