Acanthocalycium glaucum
I only got this plant last year and today it's first flower opened. I must admit I'm pretty impressed with it and really like the combination of the steel grey/blue body, brown/black spines, wooly bud and topped off by that big luminous yellow flower

Re: Acanthocalycium glaucum
It's not particularly well-known and I think it's quite an underrated plant. There's a sort of Copiapoa-ish look to it when not in flower. It would make a good plant for the identification part of the Judges Weekend.

And you can choose between yellow and red flowers!
They're not very fast growing, but that suits me fine.

Re: Acanthocalycium glaucum
There are other very close species which look pretty similar but with red, orange, or white flowers, all of which are worthwhile plants.

Re: Acanthocalycium glaucum
Do you have other Acanthocalycium in mind? There seems to be a rubriflorum form of Acanthocalycium glaucum, or at least the A. glaucum is supposed to have "Yellow or red and yellow flowers".ralphrmartin wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 5:38 pm There are other very close species which look pretty similar but with red, orange, or white flowers, all of which are worthwhile plants.

Re: Acanthocalycium glaucum
Yes, Mat, in my collection:
Acanthoclycium aurantiacum has reddish orange flowers,
Acanthocalycium erythranthum WR763 has scarlet flowers,
Acanthocalycium thionanthum v. minutum has orange flowers,
Acanthocalycium variiflorum has salmon flowers
The white flowered ones tend to be the more different ones with non glaucus bodies.
