Austrocactus seedling tips?

Post by Cidermanrolls »

Earlier this season I asked for tips on keeping Pterocactus seedlings going and got what turned out to be very good advice to prick them out early. I was surprised, but this really appears to work. I’ve hardly lost any of those I have transplanted within a few week of germination, whilst the losses of those left in situ are noticeably higher.
So, what tips for keeping the Austrocactus seedlings I’ve got going? Do I prick these out too, or leave them in the original pots? Thanks for any help.

I find Austrocactus seedlings quite robust once they are perhaps 2 or 3 months old, I don't usually repot until several months old or longer. If I do repot earlier, they don't seem to mind disturbance.

I find the main challenge is germination and keeping them alive for the first days and few weeks.

Yes, these can also grow pretty quickly if pricked out early, in my experience.
