Ferocactus species or hybrid or other ID help required please

Post by silverman166 »

Having difficulty making a positive id of the specimen in the attached photos, (which of course is often the case with cacti!), but any suggestions would be of great interest to me.

Pondering on F horridus or hybrid X Ferobergia (because of the chinning?)

Thanks.

Sorry, tried several rotations on the original but the middle photo still appears on its side on the preview, and the first one should be last, but haven't found how to re-order photos.

Looks to me like a very bloted ferocactus herrerae.
Though could be latispinus as these are mass produced. would recommend a bright spot ,, be careful of scorch,,
And no more water. Possibly one drink before winters rest. Good luck

I'd go with F. herrerae. These are a popular mass-produced species. F. latispinus has even broader central spines and slightly different radials. Can be hard to tell with young plants and believe it or not this is still a youngster. Ask again in another 5 years, it may look quite different. Keep an eye on whatever is marking the skin near the growing point, might be a pest of some sort.
