Grit recommendations

Post by Chris in Leeds »

What grit are people using as I use to get the jondo growers grit from Oakdene but they don't get grit anymore
I bought some horticultural grit but it is wet and the size is so variable and basically I'm not happy with that so would anyone recommend any
Also does anyone remember what price it was from oakdene last time you bought it

I riddle mine to get rid of the large bits and the finest particles and then store in open boxes under cover where it dries out nicely. The fine stuff makes good top dressing for seedlings

I ended up ordering some of the Jondo chick grit from an animal feed place online. With a couple of bags of Guinea pig food, the postage wasn't too bad. If you're interested I can trawl my emails and find the company for you?

I get my Jondo grits from petsapply-online.
They’re on the well known auction site. £14/15 for 25kg bag, free delivery. I’ve used them several times, reliable and prompt service.

The local quarry near here does excellent granite grit: £35 for a builders bag. Hire yourself a lorry...

I have been buying 2 to 6 mm granite ... from Arium in N Leeds ... but also Notcuts near to Featherstone.
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

I confess, since moving to a much higher mineral mix with pumice and molar clay, I no longer use a top dressing.
I do still have some gorgeous dark granite grit from pre Brexit days, sourced from the same German supplier that I used to get pumice from. I sometimes mix some of the granite in, but can no longer get it, or the pumice.
