Selenicereus Grandiflorus doesn't like cold weather

Post by ansdell »

Hello Everyone

Winters coming and I know my Selenicereus Grandiflorus doesn't like cold weather. But its too big to bring inside the house. I have also rearranged my forest cacti.

Surely you don't need to bathe in the colder months of the year? Pop them in the shower/bath.

Bring one in and then if winter is bad you will have a survivor to restart again

I am sure you can find a spot. Put it on top of a book case, under a side table or in some corner. There is always space to find if you want to, and it does not need the light during winter.

Agreed. In Canada, for example, some growers put their plants outside in the summer, then in a cellar indoors over the winter. Provided the Selenicereus is dry and cool, it will be fine for a few months with no light. If it is warm, or the compost is moist, it might try growing - in which case remove and discard the weak etiolated growth once you bring it back into the light in the spring.

One autumn several years ago I sent an unrooted Selenicereus cutting through the post. It was in one of those round cardboard tubes used for posting rolled up calendars. Somehow Royal Mail managed to take a year to deliver it. It was fine.

That's quite speedy .... did you pay for Express service, or did that parcel get special treatment?

My Queen of the night didn't forgive me cold dry overwintering, dried out roots and bottoms of stems and didn't give no one bud next year. These ones need light for blooming, though maybe overwintering in the darkness is possible if flowering isn't a term of concern.

They will take 5c ( 41f ) no problem so a cellar or an attic will be fine.
