Not for the squeamish

Post by iann »

Here's what a bored magpie will do.

I just took this shot yesterday morning. It is pretending to be a Copiapoa and live off dew.

Bits of Echinocereus thrown everywhere. You'd better not touch my Delosperma sphalmnathoides!

Carnage! Not pleasant!

Maybe a magpie after refreshment rather than entertainment? If so then maybe a bowl of water for the birds might be a wise precaution for those of us who grow a few plants al fresco!

I wonder if the magpie thought it had found a very large hairy caterpillar. The spines were certainly no protection in this case. I would be gutted if that happened to one of my plants. Perhaps you could try grafting some of the more intact pieces to start off some new clumps.

Oh dear Ian, bet you're not very happy! Perhaps your plants would be safer inside a cloche. On the bright side the damaged stems will hopefully produce lots of offsets which you could detach and root.

I'm sure the plant will live, just a shame because it was so pretty before.

As for magpies, there's no telling what they'll eat. I've had them peck all the silicone sealant from around my front door and destroy a doormat. Sometimes it just seems like the ones at the edge of survival get stuck in habitual destructive behaviours, and they come back day after day. Or it might even have been some other sort of bird although its the magpies that are being a pest at the moment.

I left a Aloe Broomii in the garden over night the other week by mistake and next morning had about three big holes in it - have no idea what did it.

Blimey that?s incredible; I would never have believed a magpie would do that!!
(PS I know it?s annoying to mention it now, but the picture with the dew is fantastic?)

Tending more towards cacti :D, particularly Gymnocalyciums, Rebutias, Sulcorebutias, Echinopses, Thelos, Feros and Mamms (and anything else I like the look of!) all in an 8 x 6 polycarb greenhouse and a few windowsills!
