Hello from new member

Post by Vladimir »

Hello folks.

I just joined the forum - and want to share some pics from my trips around SW USA. I live in central California, not fare from San Francisco and my travel is usualy limited to 10 or so hours drive from here.

The pictures are posted in Russian cactus forum (@ cactuslove.ru) some time ago - some of you may by chance have seen them already. I'm posting links here - as pictures are formatted to fit in 150k, and I feel to lazy to bother with Photoshop again. Download may be somewhat slow.

These pictures are taken last week of September in the western vicinity of Death Valley Park

Nice pictures. Could you add the names of the plants as well?

Speaking of names:

Sclerocactus polyancistrus
Echinocereus engelmannii
Echinocereus mojavensis
Opuntia basilaris
Opuntia erinacea
Cylindropuntia echinocarpa ? Golden cholla ? distinctive northern form that does not get taxonomical recognition

Welcome among us Vladimir. Great pics!

Wow.. are there cacti under all those spines?
That bottom one is really beautiful.

Happy carrier of Forby Disorder - an obsession with Euphorbia obesa.

NB. Anyone failing to provide a sensible name for me to address them will be called, or referred to, as Fred.

Speaking of spines.. These pics are taken a month ago - that is the end of the hot drought season. The plants probably did not see any rain yet, but at least it is cooler now. Chollas in spring will plum up - and will not be looking so attractive :))

Here is Opuntia basilaris - you can see the effect of drought

This is Echinocereus mojavensis. The nice mound is sitting on bare rock. To get that close for picture I had to employ some climbing skills :)) How old is it? 100 years? 200 years?

Echinocactus polycephalius. The kind of rock it sits on - limestone. Not the largest plant I have seen here, but also old..

Another Echinocereus engelmannii plant. This form is sometimes recognized as "var. chrysocentrus" - by no apparent reason to me, as brown, yellow and white-gray forms are usually growing together. This is a small plant - but in this population this is a blooming size.

Here is one good Echinocactus polycephalius

And one more Sclerocactus polyancistrus

That Opuntia basilaris pic reminded me of my old grandmother, for some reason.
