BCSS - Forum

There was some mention of a 'Northern Show' over the August Bank Holiday at the new RHS Garden at Bridgewater, Manchester. All I can find on the Forum is a mention by Tony R on the North West Mesemb Show topic where I suggested the BCSS was fast becoming a 'secret society'. I'm told there was something in the e-news sent by the BCSS but I usually miss this as Microsoft puts it in with the junk.
All I can find on Google is a brief mention on the Manchester BCSS site and it's included in the 'future events' on Ralph's nursery website. That would suggest some nurserymen have been invited.
This event might be happening in three months but I couldn't find anything in the March Cactus World and there's nothing on the RHS Bridgwater site on their events pages. Other nurserymen I've spoken to haven't been invited. I'd probably have been there if I'd been asked.
I'm assuming it must have been cancelled or postponed due to Covid. Does anyone know if this event is still going ahead with no publicity?

As far as I'm aware, no southern nurseries or sellers have been invited to this event. I have spoken to a number of sellers who were at the last National Show, and those who attended the last National event which was at Lullingstone Castle in 2019, and most tell me that they have not been informed about this event. Are we members of a National society, or not?

I'm sure you'd be allowed to go if you wanted to - why not contact Jo and find out?
If BCSS members choose not to read emails that the Society sends them, they're bound to miss announcements. There was mention of a proposed event at RHS Bridgewater in March's eNews and then a proper advert in both April's and May's. I'm sure there'll be details in the first CactusWorld produced since the details were finalised (June's). But we've all been informed.

I must make it clear that Salford is not in Manchester. It is in Greater Manchester. A totally different kettle of bees. Some parts of Salford are very near Manchester but the RHS Garden Bridgewater is not, as it is in Worsley.

Not often that I am tempted north of the river, but this will be a good reason for a long bus ride. I may even fit in a third vaccination by then. I have been looking forward to it since the 2nd of April but I am close enough to hear the town criers the Manchester Branch sent out around town. I believe beacons were lit to notify the rest of The North.

Of course, the lifting of lockdown may bring fresh waves of death and misery, as even Boris has just realised. So, don't count on anything getting back to normal for a while. The newest variant has been found in Bolton, another Borough within Greater Manchester.

We are about to start promoting the event and you will see lots more soon. It will be Saturday and Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend. The RHS garden hasn't opened yet but will do very soon and they also will be promoting the event for us. Jo Adderley and Manchester Branch are managing this event and I have asked Jo to provide you with a better update as soon as she can. Lots of nurseries have been invited but on the tracking plan many have not replied so I assume are waiting for a better understanding of restrictions.

There are plans with the RHS to organise the event so that we can operate Social Distancing if necessary but like everyone we hope that will not be necessary. If social distancing is needed the gardens will restrict access to about 1000 a day and if restrictions are lifted it is likely to be a much bigger foot fall. There will be a Marquee end if necessary the sides can be removed so that it qualifies as an outdoor space.

Nurseries are currently being invited and you will hear much more very soon.

It's made it to the BCSS home page but it still seems like we're trying to keep the details secret. The venue and date are in a tiny size font and seem to have been added as an afterthought or maybe there wasn't much room left for a link.

Since writing the above, I've managed to find a Google link to a BCSS Youtube video for Cactus World Live, it's getting about 20 views a day, some of those will be search engine bots but at least it's a start. .

Did you completely miss my post here on the subject on June 25th? It had nine replies over the subsequent 21 hours. I must admit my link is more helpful than their link.

If you are still not managing to train your email to recognise the monthly BCSS eNews newsletter (have you used the functions that allow you to set an email or email address as "Not Junk" so that future emails from that address are not treated as junk?) then all the issues of the eNews can be seen at the following web address.

As you can see, the vast majority of eNews issues are added (and sent by email) on the last day of the previous month or the first day of the month. So, it is very easy to remember to look for a new one.

The announcement was also on Facebook but who wants that evil in their lives?

It is not a secret just because you have your eyes firmly shut.
